HistoryHow The Seed Was Planted
“Inch by inch, row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow. All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground. Inch by inch, row by row, Someone bless these seeds I sow. Someone warm them from below 'til the rain comes tumblin’ down.” By David Mallett 1975, the same year David Mallett penned his famous song, Jean Edwards, Moderator of Deacons, was making plans to create a garden.
When talking about it with friends, she heard comments... “Oh, I’d like to have a garden but we don’t have any space.” or “I wish I had a garden but vegetables wouldn’t grow. We have too much shade.” She started thinking about all the land surrounding Pebble Hill and visualized the possibility of a Community Garden. Soliciting the help of fellow deacon, Fred Fladd (Cornell Cooperative Extension) and Jim Schoonmaker, they met to discuss aspects of an experiment of this sort. On March 20, 1975, Jean brought the following proposal for a Gardening Project to Session. One of the elders, Walt Haswell (master home gardener), gave enthusiastic support. “It is our feeling that this might provide a unique opportunity for Pebble Hill families and also friends outside the church — CEP (Cultural Exchange Program) friends and others — to work side by side experiencing together the hard work, challenges, fruits and joys of laboring over a plot of ground. We feel that this is one way to respond to “mission” outreach. |
